#20: Readers’ writers

Reason 20

One of the perks of running a newspaper or magazine is getting a bunch of free stuff sent to you to try out. The hopes of people who publish books, film documentaries and make stuff is that you’ll try their product and give it a good write-up.

On the one hand, of course, freebies are great. What we can’t use for Transition Voice reviews, we’re able to offer as door prizes at our local Transition Town events. On the other hand, if we want to be worthy of the freebies, we believe we have to really read or watch or try the thing before we’ll write a review. And when it comes to a book, that means we have to clear the schedule, settle in and do some reading.

Now, don’t get us wrong. It’s not like this is a burden. Doing reviews is a great excuse for us to read the latest stuff out of the peak oil community, by food writers, climate scientists, activists, spiritual leaders and others. The downside is that we have to read even when…well, when the book isn’t so good.

Still, we do it because we know our book reviews are very popular. Our readers want to know whether a book is worth buying, borrowing or standing in the book store for a week “browsing” until it’s finished. Thus you see our robust reviews section, and even a list of our top ten peak oil book picks from this year.

If you’re an author or publisher, send us your book(s) on peak oil, clean energy, climate change, economic crisis, dystopian fiction, or related topics in food, farming and Transition. We’ll read and we promise to turn out a thoughtful review of your work. And readers, you can keep counting on us to put in the extra time to give you the straight story in each review.
